My Genre

I chose the Alternative Genre...

Genre is a type of category that differentiates one text from another and helps create a target audience with different codes and conventions. Each genre has its own codes and conventions which are the associations and audience expectations of that specific text e.g. in a scifi movie you would expect to see aliens and this has developed from a code to a convention.  Codes are the denotations and connotations of the text which include mise-en-scence, lighting, editing and cinematography

The conventions of an alternative music video can vary but mainly, the audience would expect to see the artist in the video acting, dancing or performing  as themselves or as another character and adopting a different persona. Costume is an important aspect of an alternative video too as it should be quirky and individual, not relating to the latest fashion like mainstream genres (like i said earlier in a post my chosen alternative genre artist described her image as "cheerleader, vintage, cartoon") . The camera shots used in an alternative video don't seem to have any conventions as each video is quirky and individual like the artist and likes to not follow conventions The lighting in a alternative music video is adapted to the mood and atmosphere of the video, a kind of visual pathetic
fallacy ... e.g. when the artist is sad, the lighting should be dull to reflect the mood and atmosphere.
