Research: What is a Homewrecker?

home·wreck·er/ˈhōmˌrekər/

Noun:
A person who is blamed for the breakup of a marriage or family, usually because of his or her affair with one of the partners.
Someone who destroys lives.

Although my character does not toy with people in a marriage, only breaks hearts and doesn't toy with people's marriages herself, this is a route I could take a little bit.

Dancing...

Since I am in Newcastle during half-term I was unable to film for my music video. Rather than not doing anything I asked Kat, Sam and Meg (dance people) to come round to my house to brainstorm some ideas and routines so I could plan the dance sections out.

I asked my friend Kat to choreograph my dance routine as I am not a dancer myself. She is a very experienced dancer and is always thinking creatively therefore I knew she would be perfect to ask.

I asked my friend Sam to feature in the dance since when I have been to dance clubs with her I saw she had a talent for dancing and although she did not take dance at a level she was very good at it and still enjoyed it.

Unfortunately, Meg  (the main character/protagonist) could not attend as she had a work experience placement. This did not affect things too much as she would not be in the majority of the dance routine anyway.

Rehearsal Video:

  • We encountered a few problems when trying to film the dance as in my bedroom there was limited space to fully express the movement.
  • We came across problems such as one chorus section of the song was 15 seconds yet another was 30 seconds. As I wanted the dance to be a continuous scene that contrasted with the different scenes and settings from the verses it was hard to try to keep the dance similar but not boring.
  • We had to change original ideas to fit in with the timing of the song and the beat, however we also had to take some ideas out as they were too long for the fast paced song.
  • I understand that this is only the beginning of the process and many more ideas may change.
  • Also the protagonist Meg was very busy during the summer holidays on a work experience placement so could not attend. However we did use a rather hilarious prop to fill her place so my dancers could still pretend she was there for spacing reasons.
  • It was a bit more difficult without Meg there as we had to make decisions without her that she may have been against and we could not have her input at this time.

I still have to think about costume, make up, props and the location for the dance.

Profile of Dancers: Kat and Sam

My chosen dancers...

Katie Walker

Studies Chemistry, Psychology, Dance and Biology
AGE 17

Kat is a life long friend who I have always been close with. She is an excellent dancer and has been going to dance classes from a young age. She has a great talent also for choregoraphy so I was delighted when she agreed to help me with this in my music video!

For a second dancer I chose:

Sammie Berridge

Studies English, Biology and Psychology
AGE 17

Sammie is another friend of mine who has a passion for dance. I have admired her dancing when attending dance clubs with her from year 7. I was very pleased when she said yes to being in my music video!

Queen of Hearts Outfit...

Search for props

I looked on many websites for props to be part of the mise-en-scene in my video.

PREZI

However most of the props I looked at buying were very expensive and not affordable, therefore I decided to visit my old secondary school, Longcroft. Luckily they agreed to let me use some of their dance/drama props in my music video and since it is a performing arts college there were many props and costumes I could have access to.

I went in the room with my friend Kat, she will also be featured as one of the dancers in my music video:

The wedding scene - dilemma solved by extra research

As I was planning out my story board I became concerned that my shots would be too fast being 0.02 seconds long each and I wondered if  this would make the wedding look too rushed and unrealisticly edited to the song.

To solve this I looked up different music videos that had a wedding scene in to find out how long the shots were...

1.
In this song the wedding sceen has very short shots some lasting less than one second. The whole marriage scene looks realistic and lasts for 10 seconds in total 2. In this song again some of the shots are one second and do not look out of place. This has cleared up my dilemma by doing some extra research.

Make up - MEG

Some of the make up experimented with for my music video:

Lipsiticks

This lipstick made my actress look a lot older. Since it is has this effect and is quite dark red it could be associated with the connotations of a dark, twisted love - which is the storyline!

This lipstick is a lighter shade than the previous photo, again it has the right connotations but is a bit more friendly and inviting which could work too. However I think it is a bit too pinky and not red enough to connote the danger

Costumes - MEG

VIDEO OF DISCUSSING OUTFITS
SCENE ONE - WEDDING SCENE

This dress did look like a realistic typical wedding gown. However since my protagonist is attending a twisted wedding it does not really fit in with my ideas. Although she is deceiving her lovers that she is real this is a little too convincing in my opinion.

This dress does could look like a wedding dress when put with a veil, I particularly like this dress as it has the lace the connotes innocence but the skulls which could foreshadow the death of the groom. The skulls also put an ironic twist on the lyrics "I'm after a brand new start" since this connotes she is wanting a brand new start in a different relationship and the death of this current relationship in the scene.

This dress has a blue tinge to it which I think is very quirky and different, which is great as this fits in with the alternative genre. It's lacy pattern connotes innocence however the blue could connote the forshadowed sadness of the groom.

This dress is white and lacy, however I do not think it would look as realistic as the other wedding dress photos.

This dress would look like one when paired up with a veil, however I think since my protagonist has a wild character this does not represent or connate the right attitudes as it is quite plain with a bit of sparkle

THE OUTFIT FOR CHORUS DANCING

In my opinion this dress will be great for the dancing that will be included in my video. The black connotes my protagonist's twisted obsession along with rebellion to the typical stereotype of females getting their hearts broken by men. The ball and chain gap in the middle of the dress could represent my character locking her true emotions away so she can be a heartbreaker. Also when moved about in the skirt is very dynamic and flows beautifully which will make my protagonist look very graceful and desirable.

This outfit was put together simply because of the bright colours to see what it would look like. I thought it would be a good outfit to move about in for the dance and would catch attention. However it is not suitable for my video

SCENE TWO - LEAVING THE BEDROOM

This nightie is silk to connote lust and sexuality. However it is very long so would not work very well in my video for when my protagonist wears a leather jacket to walk out of the scene.

This nightie conveys innocence of the female (by it's stereotypical female colour) bur also sexuality and lust with the silk. It does look okay with the jacket and clearly the nightie (symbolising the disguise of my protagonist's rebellion) contrasts with my protagonist's true side (the leather jacket)

This outfit did look great and perfectly symbolised the sexuality side of my music video and women being exploited for their bodies. However since there is no bottom half my protagonist will feel uncomfortable in this outfit for my music video unless we can find a pair of shorts to pair it with when walking out the room.

This nightie would work very well in my music video, the flowers against the black could show my character's personality (the flowers are hiding her cold heart/rebellion inside) The silk connotes sexuality and lust which is ideal as that is what this scene is about. When paired up with the leather jacket the combination does not look like the other black nightie since the length of the nightie is ideal.

Furthermore, I think the shots of my character walking out of the bedroom have to be very effective as they are important. This nightie will be really effective for this important scene.

THE PUB/DATE SCENE

This dress looks very sparkly and different to suit my protagonist's personality, the daring colour shows her confident personality and will convey this in my video.

I thought this dress would look vintage for the date, however I do not think it suits the character's personality of being outgoing and confident

I loved this dress on my artist, I think it is too plain for the date but will probably try to incorporate it elsewhere in my music video

This dress does have to right connotations, the lips are a sign of sexuality and are presented in an alternative unique way.

I think this dress would have been ideal since my protagonist stands out in this costume. The comic book connotations show that she is heroic and that the audience are following her story and are on her side. Unfortunately the dress was a size too small and was very difficult to walk in so we could not use it.

This dress looked lovely for the date. I liked the way the black symbolised rebellion too. However it seemed a little too formal for my concept.

This outfit seemed too causal to include in the pub/date scene but may be used elsewhere
