Lyrics Analysis

LYRICS ANALYSIS
Verse 1Every boyfriend is the oneUntil otherwise provenThe good are never easyThe easy never goodAnd loving never happens like you think it really should
Analysis: I think this part of the song sounds very hymn-like and therefore I am going to shoot it in a church - wedding.
'The good are never easy, the easy never good' - almost like preaching. OUTSIDE CHURCH

Verse 2Deception and perfection are wonderful traitsOne will breed lovethe other hateyou'll find me in the lonely heartsunder 'I'm after a brand new start'
And I don't belong to anyone
Analysis: When the lyrics mention deception and perfection it makes me think of wedding vows. There is a quirky twist when she says about breeding love (after marriage) and hate (not conventional). You'll find me in the lonely heart: makes the audience question why she is there.  Under I'm after a brand new start - this makes the audience feel like she is not committed or interested in getting married. When the lyrics say under - I will lift a veil off her face and she will speak the words (lip-sync) this is ironic and I have turned it into a bit of a pun.The phrase I don't belong to anyone conveys her dominance and how she doesn't want to be possessed by men. INSIDE CHURCH

ChorusThey call me HomewreckerHomewreckerThey call me HomewreckerHomewrecker
Analysis: My protagonist is a homewrecker as she wrecks people's lives and what they can call home and be used to - she takes it away. This is exemplified in Leann Rimes' lyrics: 'Cause I know I've been waitingEvery day of my life
To be with you, to be with you.
In your arms I know where I belong.
I've never known this feeling before,
But it Feels Like Home.
In your eyes I know what I can be.
You've opened up your heart to me, oh
And it Feels Like Home.

As this is upbeat I will probably have dancers in this section

Verse 3Girls and their curls and their gourmet vomitBoys and their toys and their six inch rocketsWe're all very lovely 'til we get to know each otherAs we stop becoming friends and we start becoming lovers
And I don't belong to anyone
I will define my storyline with my protagonist flicking through an obsessive journal full of pictures of the men's hearts she has broken, and her next 3 targets. This will show her obsessed. I think this fits in well with this section as she is talking about stereotypical girls and boys and poking fun "gourmet vomit" and "six inch rockets". The lyrics "we're all very lovely till we get to know each other as we stop becoming friends and we start becoming lovers" shows the destructiveness of heartbreak. The phrase I don't belong to anyone conveys her dominance and how she doesn't want to be possessed by men.

ChrousThey call me HomewreckerHomewrecker (I'm only happy when I'm on the run)They call me HomewreckerHomewrecker (I broke a million hearts just for fun)They call me Homewrecker ]Homewrecker (I'm only happy when I'm on the run)They call me HomewreckerHomewrecker (I broke a million hearts just for fun)
Analysis: For continuity I will again have dancers. As for the lyrics this is where I formulated the idea for an extreme heartbreaker character. "I'm only happy when I'm on the run" and "I break a million hearts just for fun" shows that she does take pleasure in breaking heats.

Verse 4I'm only happy when I'm on the runI break a million hearts just for funI don't belong to anyoneI guess you could say that my life's a messBut I'm still looking pretty in this dressI'm the image of deception
Analysis: "I'm only happy when I'm on the run" and "I break a million hearts just for fun" shows that she does take pleasure in breaking heats. The way the tone of this part of the song is deep and full of mystery and adventure I want to portray my protagonist running away secretly from her 'lover' in the night. This again could fit in with the phrase "I don't belong to anyone" which is how she exited the last scene.  "I guess you could say that my life's a mess, but I'm still looking pretty in this dress" could show her care-free and guilt-free attitude and also could link back to the wedding scene. "I'm the image of deception" I thought I could film my protagonist in the mirror writing in lipstick 'homewrecker' or the name of the album or the name of my artist... the effect of writing in lipstick is often shown as a type of confession in horror movies and this is effective...

BridgeWhen everything is life and deathYou may feel like there's nothing leftInstead of love and trust and laughterWhat you get is happy never afterBut deep down all you want is loveThe pure kind we all dream ofBut we cannot escape the pastSo you and I will never last
AnalysisAfter this part of the song, the beat changes and the tone is of something omnipotent and almost has a religious feel "When everything is life and death". I had to think for a long time about who this character could be who my protagonist could aspire to be like for this section. I thought of the Queen of Hearts  "what you get is happy never after" (developed on in my influential media texts post), and therefore will use the green room to portray another world in which she belongs... it is almost like a delusional dream type thing. In this I will have revisit the boys who have had their hearts broken and perhaps see the consequences of this, the headline, "kiss the boys and make them die" (in my inspirational media texts post) has made me consider them killing themselves in some form because they cannot cope with the loss of love and heart break. "so you and I will never last"

Chorus'cause I'm a HomewreckerHomewrecker (I'm only happy when I'm on the run)'cause I'm a HomewreckerHomewrecker (I broke a million hearts just for fun)'cause I'm a HomewreckerHomewrecker (I'm only happy when I'm on the run)'cause I'm a HomewreckerHomewrecker (I broke a million hearts just for fun)'cause I'm a HomewreckerHomewrecker
Analysis: For continuity I will again have dancers. As for the lyrics this is where I formulated the idea for an extreme heartbreaker character. "I'm only happy when I'm on the run" and "I break a million hearts just for fun" shows that she does take pleasure in breaking heats.  However at the very end I will have my protagonist walk into a pub/bar type setting where her third target will be lined up to have his heart broken, then she will literally nod and wink at the camera to confirm the audience's thoughts that he is the next target and then she will walk towards the next victim as the last "Homewrecker" there is no musical accompaniment to make it sound more personal like a realisation ... fade out.

Polls

I sent out this message to my friends to gain audience feedback on my polls:

Profile of my chosen actress (the protagonist) - Megan Berridge

I have chosen my friend Megan Berridge, aged 17 to be the protagonist and main actress of my music video.

At the moment she is studying Physics, Maths, and Art at Wyke Sixth Form college.
We not only go to the same college but live very close by to each other so this is really beneficial for meeting up and discussing ideas, filming etc.

Megan is a great actress and her appearance really suits the look I want in my video; she is naturally beautiful and could be a serious heartbreaker! She also is very individual in the way she dresses and this is another reason why I think she would be perfect in my music video and the rest of my design brief (she fits with the alternative genre).

Deconstruction and Reconstruction of Shelter by Birdy PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS

In groups of four we were set a task to re-create 30 seconds of a music video we chose to do Shelter by Birdy and decided to reconstruct one minute of the video to go the extra mile!

PREZI FORMAT

PROBLEMS

Filming and Directing

We encountered many problems working in a big group as it seemed like there were only 3 of us doing all the work and people were not working together.  As a solution the group split a bit and swapped roles.

Amy took on more of a directors role and Tasha did more of the filming instead - as this suited the group better.  I (Olivia) also helped with some of the camera work rather than just being the cast. Meg and Ella did not suggest anything as they were supposed to be editing - all this confusion of things not going to plan made our group quite stressed and as a result we did not have time to film all the scenes we needed to.

On the day we were filming it was a bright sunny day, unfortunately since the British weather was not stereotypical and dull we had to edit all our film to make it much darker - and this took a lot of time. Also on the day we filmed I was not feeling very well which probably came across on camera.

We also filmed some of our video in the dark with torches but we learnt in the process that cameras work on  light so it didn't come out very good.

We rushed quite a lot of the filming and I (the cast) hadn't heard the song before, so I did not know the lyrics.
Also I didn't really want to be in the video but because I was at a physio appointment when the the roles were dished out.

Editing

Megan and Ella were supposed to do the editing but were not meeting deadlines.
Ella went on holiday (which she did not inform us of) so she didn't get to film or edit.
On one of the editing lessons Tasha, Megan and Ella (the editing team) did not turn up, so it fell to me Amy, and Claudia to do the editing as the solution.

We we had to start again as the one shot that was done, was too slow and not to time. Eventually we got a lot of the editing done, but the "filming group's"  moral was low due to people not turning up because of a University open day. (Which they must have known they were going to when we arranged the days for editing.)

The day after this we decided to edit again to finish off, on this lesson Amy was ill but this was not a problem really as she did the filming, and Ella was on holiday. The problem here was because myself and Claudia did the editing beforehand it felt like we were doing Megan's job and Megan did not make much effort to do some editing herself. Both me and Claudia were annoyed about this and asked Tasha to do the lipsyncing bit to the middle and end section which she did - overall we felt like the filming group especially me and Claudia had done the majority of the work and although it had initially been spread out fairly, it was not spread out fairly when it the work actually had to be done!

Eventually we got the video done and were happy with it - but this has taught us not to work in a group with so many people as lots of problems can occur! We were mostly happy with the outcome of our video but we know a lot could be changed to make it better!

The ironic thing is we could have made this video "better with the lights turned on"

Research

I did some research into Genre...

Audience Feedback on Influencial Texts

To obtain results from my audience I conducted interviews:

I encountered a problem here as somebody deleted all my footage before it had finished uploading. So I had to film again.

I filmed my other video using iMovie on my Mac, however I am finding difficulties uploading this to you tube. (solution convert it to QuickTime .mov and upload worked!)
